Enthusiasm Changes Everything in LIFE

I returned this week from and incredible LIFE business leadership meeting in Tampa, Fl. Something special happens when you surround yourself with winners, people striving to move on. The enthusiasm that spread through the room was contagious. That lead me to the question, what causes enthusiasm? I mean many people entered the room lets just say not very enthusiastic! The speakers on stage had the great information just as before, what changed? The leaders became enthusiastic and the crowd followed!

People follow a leaders ENTHUSIASM

The weekend inspired me to come home and dig into the top five books the LIFE business recommends to read. (How I Raised My Self from Failure To Success in Selling, Magic of Thinking Big, How to Win Friends and Influence People, Personality Plus and How to Have Power and Confidence With People. Buy Now) Now I have been through the top 5 at least 8 times but there is always something to learn.

I began with Frank Bettger’s book How I Raised Myself from Failure to Success and with no surprise the first chapter is about enthusiasm!

Mr. Bettger shares how it was enthusiasm that change his career in baseball, insurance sales and ultimately his LIFE.

Frank made a conscience decision to control his fear with enthusiasm. Here is what his coach said about it:

“This new player, Bettger, has a barrel of enthusiasm. He inspired our boys. They not only won the game, but looked better than at any time this season.”

Just weeks before Frank was let go from a team because he lacked enthusiasm and was called lazy mostly due to  his fear! You can inspire others around you and over come fear with just shear enthusiasm.

How do you get enthusiastic

I let two things stop me in business, fear and bordom. After reading this book the first time it all began to change.  You have complete control over this, it is not something you have to be born with it can be acquired. How? Just by forcing yourself to act enthusiastic. To be enthusiastic – act enthusiastic! I remember trying this for myself. I was building a business where I needed to give presentations in front of groups of people. Not only was I boring I was scared to death! My fear would take over and it would be over. I remember reading this book and realizing I could turn my fear into excitement if I could be enthusiastic. In one day this changed for me, I did not get better, I just found a way to act enthusiastic. Before leaving to give a talk I found a mirror and began to run through my presentation. Wow, was I boring, no smile, no voice inflection and a look of terror!

Then a story shared from stage months earlier hit me. This gentleman struggling with the same concerns that I had found a way to fix them. He would find his way into the prospects bathroom upon arrival and give himself a pep talk, saying I am fired up and jump up and down over and over again while he smiled in the mirror. This method worked wonders until one day he tried this in the bathroom of a small trailer. You see, he was a fairly large man and when he began to jump up and down it shook the trailer off of the foundation and the whole trailer tipped over! Now thats some enthusiasm! Maybe that is a little far buy you get my point.

Here is what Frank Bettger has to say:

Enthusiasm is by far the hightest paid quality on earth, probably because it is one of the rarest; yet, it is one of the most contagious. If you are enthusiastic, your listener is very likely to become enthusiastic, even thought you may present your ideas poorly. Without enthusiasm, your sales talk is about as dead as last year’s turkey. Once you begin to acquire it, enthusiasm works constantly within you. You may be sitting quietly in your home…an idea occurs to you…that idea begins to develop…finally, you become consumed with enthusiasm…nothing can stop you.

It will help you overcome fear, become more successful in business, make more money, and enjoy a healthier, richer, and happier life.

How can you begin? There is just one rule:

To become enthusiastic-act enthusiastic.

Put this rule into action for thirty days and be prepared to see astonishing results. It easily may revolutionize your entire life.

God bless,

Dan Hawkins

  1. Great! Needed that 🙂

  2. Well said Dan! As always your timing is impeccable! As an insurance agent this chapter is invaluable! So much so that my Territory Manager made it mandatory for our team to read and discuss it before W Clement Stone birthday week launched Mon! Fired Up for personal and Stealth-wide enthusiasm to spur a LeaderShift!

  3. Great post Dan! I have watched you use your enthusiasm to change the mood of a room many times. I appreciate how you are always leading by learning and by example. Thanks for your role modeling.

    1. All of those same things can be said about you Matt! Thank you for your patience and for expecting the best out of me!

  4. Thanks for the post Dan — loved it! Also, thank you again for the advice you gave me last night. New enthusiasm, new hope!

  5. Wow! That is a great article with some outstanding perspective! I am going to start reading that book today! I can not wait to start applying the things I learn from it with the people I am going to meet tonight!!!! It is going to be awesome!

  6. It never ceases to amaze me that every interaction can be dramatically altered by enthusiasm! I’ve taken these same principles to application in waking our household up in the morning and it is SOOO much more enjoyable! We even get out the “enthusiam” when we have to work together on a chore that none of us is really looking forward to because it can transform any situation.
Thanks Dan for the post and the decision to highlight this principle, keeping it front and center to encourage, instruct and lead.

By the way, anyone wanting a perfect example of enthusiasm need only check out one of your talks on the LIBRARY or on CD. In short order, one would hear
    1. “What I love about…”
    2. “And pretty soon you start to….”
    3. “Absolutely!”
    4. “It’s so interesting/inspiring/incredible…”
    5. “How can you not get excited about….”

And the content that follows these statements by Dan always highlights circumstances and lessons that significantly alter perspective; that’s leadership!

And for that among many things, thank you Dan!
